What actually sets a minimum
Four things behave like fixed costs. They exist whether you order ten pieces or a hundred. The bars below are a rough guide to their relative weight, not a measurement, and they vary by product.
Wood and fabric are bought in lots, finishes are mixed in batches, jigs and patterns must be set up, and a production line has to be scheduled. Spread over a small quantity, those costs make each piece expensive, so factories set a floor.
