How to Keep Elderly Adults Safe

3 min read

If you have a senior family member, then you know that it is a challenge to keep them safe at home. There are just some many things that could go wrong inside their homes. They are likely to get hurt because of their physical condition and the natural weakness of their bodies.

The Challenges They Must Face

The elderly must face certain challenges wherever they are living on their own or with their family. They are liable to get them injured due to their condition. They also find it increasingly difficult to do the same things that they have done before.

The Layout of the Ideal Home

Seniors must live in homes that have been specifically designed or laid out for them. They will have a hard time living in a typical house. They would need some things that a youngger person does not.

One example of a need by seniors is the need for wide paths and doorways that they would have no difficulty in negotiating. They also need to have the floor cleared and cleaned of any debris that might trip them.

The things that elders need most of the time should also be gathered in areas that they have no difficulty in accessing. In order to help you out even further, here are just some of the things that you can do in order to make your home an ideal place for an adult adult:

  • Take out pieces of furniture that are not really needed. They could just get in the way.
  • Make sure that you position the furniture so that there would be enough space for a wheelchair or for someone walking with the aid of a cane.
  • When the elderly person in your house is used to the placement of the pieces, then do not move them around anymore.
  • See to it that the pieces of furniture that you have will not move if someone leans on it.
  • The arm rests for the chairs should strong and sturdy enough to give support to seniors when they are getting up from the seat.
  • If there are any sharp corners or areas then reduce the risk of injury by placing some form of cushion over it.
  • See to it that seats are 20 inches high. If you have chairs that are below then you can raise it using wood platforms.
  • If you clear glass doors or window panes, then better give the seniors a warning. You can place tape marks on it to tell them that there is a glass door or window pane.
  • See to it that the room where the senior is staying has night lights that turn on automatically. That way they would not have a hard time moving around inside when it turns dark.
  • Make sure that there is a clear fire escape that the elders can access and use in an emergency.
  • Make sure that cords and wires do not get in the way.

These are just some of the things that you can do in order to ensure the safety of elderly adults.
